The Shorty Palmer Method for Re-skinning a Djembe: The dreaded shaving
|
At this point you have the head fairly tight and soaking wet. It is now time for the dreaded shaving. I have found there is no reason to fret over this. I use a plan bic razor. All you have to do is break the plastic guard off the front of the blade, exposing the blade completely. I just use a small needle nose pliers to accomplish that task. You do need to be careful not to touch the blade when doing that. I then take a fine file, wet stone or sand paper and file the corners of the blade off at a 45-degree angle. This will prevent the blade from cutting into the head. To shave the head, you shave with the the way the hair lays (go with the flow, not against). Do not go against the grain (direction, flow, you know what I mean) because you will end up nicking the head. The best way I found to hold the razor is to keep the handle of the razor parallel to the surface of the head, this will keep the blade almost 90 degree to the surface of the drum. Kind of dragging the blade across as oppose to trying to slice the hair off. Be careful along the rim of the drum. You want to put less pressure because it will be a harder surface that you are shaving and it will have a tendency to try and cut the skin. Keep shaving and you can press harder as you feel more comfortable.
